About Maggie
I’m a mother, daughter, grandmother, aunt, sister and writer. Raised in Sydney, NSW, I currently live with my Irish-born partner by the Derwent River, in beautiful Hobart/Nipaluna.
I was never that child sitting quietly reading or scribbling in the corner, only discovering my passion for writing stories after my 4th child headed off to university.
Prior to falling in love with fiction-writing, I worked in the fields of nursing and community welfare. I’ve had dozens of my stories chosen for publication in literary magazines and anthologies in Australia, N.Z. Canada, the U.S., the U.K., France, South Africa and across Europe, all without undertaking any formal education in creative writing.
So, what steered me toward story-writing? After stumbling upon a weekend course about the recording of family history, I joined a local writing group and quickly became obsessed with learning the craft, attending every creative writing work-shop, writers’ festival and discussion group possible. Often still writing and redrafting my stories at 2 or 3am, I soon began to enter competitions. A little success there, plus endless practice, led to the occasional acceptance for publication. What a buzz that was! 20 years later, I still feel equally elated each time one of my stories is published.
While my fiction is contemporary, I haven’t stuck to one particular genre. I’ve written psychological thrillers, murders, love stories and sci-fi, and continue to enjoy exploring everything from the simplest to the most complex relationships, along with those beautifully flawed characters! Having said that, nothing I’ve written would be suitable for publication in those popular women’s magazines.
Lastly, I much prefer traditional print publishing to e-publication. For that reason, you won’t find much of my work to read online. To thank you for reading all the way down to here, I’ve included a flash on this site. Just click on ‘STORY’.
